International Social Communication Cinema Conference

Roopkala Kendro organises the annually held International Social Communication Cinema Conference. This provides the platform to bring together a collection of good and socially relevant films. The uniqueness of the conference is in promoting film viewing among audience segments for which the Institute is dedicated to work. It also aims to explore the scope for social communication cinema to make a space in mainstream television.

This conference brings together people from villages, towns and cities, civil society, cooperatives, self help groups, local leaders and administrative representatives from different levels, policy makers and planners, advertising agencies, activists, students, scholars, film lovers and both the electronic and print media. The films and documentaries (Indian as well as International) screened at the Conference primarily address and raise problems and issues related to the lives of the marginalized and the disadvantaged sections of society whose voices are most often not heard through mainstream media. The seminars which form an important part of the conference create a space for deliberation and focused discussions among the different audience segments.

A unique aspect of this Conference lies in organizing similar district level conferences to enable broader participation among the same audience. A beginning has already been made with initiatives in Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, Purulia, Diamond Harbour and Howrah.
